Politics
Dubai is an autocracy run by the Maktoum family, currently headed by Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum. Dubai is one of seven Emirates that form the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which became independent of Britain in 1971.
Population
Dubai City's population is around 670,000 and is growing at around 5% per annum. More than 80% of its population are expatriates, of which there are around 30,000 UK nationals, while the biggest single group of expatriates are construction and service workers from the Indian sub-continent. The Emirate as a whole has a population of 1.07m and the UAE is home to 2.4m people.
Weather
Dubai has a tropical, arid climate, with year-round sunshine but some severe temperatures in the summer months. The hottest time of the year is from May to September, when maximum temperatures can hit 39ºC and humidity is at its highest. Temperatures are much more comfortable between November and March, when maximums fall to between 23ºC and 27ºC.
